James Harper

Durham- James Russell Harper, 71, passed away Monday, July 15, 2019 at Duke University Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 20, 2019 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Shackleford-Howell Funeral Home in Fremont.  Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Fremont.  The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10 until 10:45 a.m. at the funeral home and other times at the home of his sister, Tammy Moore, 207 N. Vance Street in Fremont.

Mr. Harper was born in Wayne County on August 14, 1947 to the late Jasper Lewis Harper and Roxie Barnes Harper.  He was an avid bowler.

He is survived by two sons, James Lewis Harper and wife, Dorothy of Richmond, Virginia and Christopher “Chris” Harper and wife, Jessica of Richmond, Virginia; one brother, Roger Harper and wife, Judy of Lucama; two sisters, Priscilla Cummings and husband, Levi of Fremont and Tammy Moore of Fremont; five grandchildren, Christopher Harper Jr., Collin Harper, Colton Harper, Lindsay Harper and Heather Oliver and a special lifelong friend, Paulette Henderson of Durham.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Harper was preceded in death by his grandmother, Betty Barnes.

The family is in the care of Shackleford-Howell Funeral Home, 102 North Pine Street in Fremont.
