W.T. Smith, 80, of Fremont passed away Monday, September 26, 2022 at UNC Health Wayne.
W.T. was born in Wayne County on October 16, 1941 to the late John Ed and Martha Edmundson Smith. He was the owner and operator, along with his wife at Capital Café in Fremont for over 30 years from 1985-2018. The business continues today under the ownership of his daughter and son-in-law. He served as Alderman for the Town of Fremont from 1991 to 2019, Fremont Rescue from 1964-1994, Fremont Fire Department from 1965-2018 where he served as Chief from 1974-1981 and received Fireman of the Year in 1988. He was a lifetime member of the Fremont Rescue and Volunteer Fire Department and will be deeply missed by the Fremont community.
W.T. is survived by one son, Tommy Smith and wife, Darlene of Belfast; one daughter, Donna Barrett and husband, Ken of Pikeville; one brother, John Ed Smith of Goldsboro; four grandchildren, Brandi Davis and husband, Robert, Garrett Smith and wife, Betty, Will Barrett and wife, Ashley and Krista Beamon and husband, Taylor and four great-grandchildren, Ethan Davis, Kendall Grace Davis, Rett Smith and Raegan Barrett and one on the way; his beloved dog, Sherman and many other relatives, customers and dear friends.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Elaine Smith.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, September 28, 2022 from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at Shackleford-Howell Funeral Home, 102 N. Pine Street in Fremont and other times at W.T.’s residence in Fremont. Funeral service will be held Thursday, September 29, 2022 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Shackleford-Howell Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Fremont.
Services have been entrusted to the care of Shackleford-Howell Funeral Home in Fremont, the town he loved and committed his whole life to.
